  1. I probably wouldn’t do a thing until I did some extensive research on the press. If I’m going to hand over my work and put my name on something they produce, I want to know every nook and cranny of that company.

  2. I have to agree with C.B. Plus I’d want to be sure that at some future date it wouldn’t be up for publication with a big publisher—of course, there are no guarantees.

  3. Yes, a very difficult question to answer without many, many concrete details. Likely, it comes down to an author’s goal. If one simply wants to be published so that he or she can say, “I’m finally published!” then, yes, absolutely. If one wants to make a substantial amount of money out of the gate (and good luck with that!), then, no, hold out for the bigger fish.

Of course, if the small press is will to publish my novel as a hard copy but allow me to keep the electronic rights, then it’s probably a win, all things considered. In fact, that might be downright ideal given the state of dead-tree publishing these days!
